Artist Statement

I was born in Albuquerque but grew up in the rolling green hills of northeastern Oklahoma. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.A. in Journalism in 1989 and headed out to make my way in the world. After moving to Albuquerque in 1991, I went to work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and eventually became a writer-editor. For 9 years I wrote and edited reports, press releases, brochures, signs, web pages, and more reports. I also learned a little bit about designing trails and visitor centers for national wildlife refuges and, in the process, was lucky enough to get to see some of the most beautiful places in the Southwest.

In 1999, I was also lucky enough to marry Ric Riester and, following the birth of our first child, I decided to leave my job and do the stay-at-

home mom thing. After much volunteering and part-timing, I began my own business, Jolie Designs, making handbags, diaper bags, and quilts.

I am now on the verge of discovering the artist within; I am testing the waters with art quilts, mixed media, and acrylic painting. I have a fierce love of color and pattern, and I can’t wait to see what I can make next.

The inspiration for Jolie Designs (and the model for the Jolie Girl logo), comes from my sister, Jolie Wingo, who died in 1997 at the age of 24. I continually look for ways to honor and celebrate her memory—what could be more perfect than works of art bearing her name?
