The Seamstress by Maggie Tomei

I am mostly what one might call a “self-taught” artist, but have enjoyed the luxury of taking workshops during my adult years in various regions of the United States. I especially enjoy mixed-media because it allows me to utilize various skills that I have learned over the years. My passion for creating an assemblage allows me to tell a personal story that incorporates found objects that I have collected from early childhood on. This piece tells the story of my much loved grandmother who was a seamstress and furrier in her time. First, I made an encaustic wax collage of her on canvas and finished the piece by placing the canvas in a painted box that I embellished with found objects that reminded me of her. If you look closely, you will see a glass heart entangled in a web of organza, which symbolizes that my heart will always be with her.
My other passions include but are not limited to the following forms of creativity: visual journaling, photography, altered art, book arts, ATC’s, printmaking, painting, collage, and working with fibers. I also love the idea of recycling parts of things that have lost their use in today’s society and incorporating them into my artwork.
